Not All Heavy Metals Behave the Same
When people talk about heavy metals, they're often grouped together as though they all behave the same way.
In reality, they don't.
Each heavy metal has its own common sources, tends to accumulate in different tissues, and can have different biological effects. Understanding these differences is important when learning about environmental exposures and making informed health decisions.
Mercury
Mercury is commonly associated with certain seafood, particularly larger predatory fish. It has a tendency to accumulate in the nervous system, which is why excessive mercury exposure has been a major focus of public health research.
Lead
Lead is most commonly linked to older paint, plumbing, contaminated soil, and certain occupational exposures. Once inside the body, lead can accumulate in bones and teeth, where it may remain for many years.
Cadmium
Cadmium can be found in cigarette smoke, some foods, industrial emissions, and certain fertilizers. It primarily accumulates in the kidneys, making long-term exposure an important area of research in kidney health.
Arsenic
Unlike the other metals discussed here, arsenic occurs naturally in the earth's crust. It can be present in groundwater and foods such as rice. Although arsenic is metabolized and excreted more rapidly than metals like lead or cadmium, chronic exposure can still have significant health effects.
