Heavy metals can interfere with the body’s antioxidant defenses and increase oxidative stress, meaning there is more cellular damage and more reactive molecules for the body to manage.
And this can potentially be felt in ways that seem completely unrelated.
Think fatigue, brain fog, headaches, poor concentration, muscle weakness, digestive issues, feeling run-down, or feeling like your body just isn’t handling stress the way it used to.
What does oxidative stress have to do with it?
Oxidative stress can affect mitochondria, proteins, cell membranes, and cellular signaling.
Your mitochondria are responsible for producing much of the energy your cells need to function. When cells are struggling to produce energy or maintain normal function, you may notice the effects in the tissues and systems that depend heavily on them.
This is one reason why the effects of oxidative stress can feel so broad. It isn't necessarily one isolated symptom, it can involve multiple processes happening at the cellular level.
You can experience several of these issues without realizing they may share an underlying biological mechanism.
That doesn’t mean heavy metals are automatically the cause. These symptoms have many possible causes, and symptoms alone cannot tell you what is responsible.
