Understanding Thyroid Health

The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland located at the front of the neck, just below the Adam’s apple and wrapped around the windpipe. Although small, the thyroid plays a massive role in overall health and wellness.

When functioning normally, you typically cannot feel your thyroid gland at all. Its primary job is to regulate how the body uses energy by producing hormones that control metabolism.

The thyroid influences:

✔ Energy production ✔ Body temperature ✔ Heart rate ✔ Weight regulation ✔ Mood and cognition ✔ Hormone balance ✔ Metabolic function

The Thyroid Hormones: T3 & T4

The thyroid primarily produces two hormones:

• T4 (Thyroxine) • T3 (Triiodothyronine)

T3 is considered the active thyroid hormone and plays a major role in regulating metabolic rate, energy levels, and cellular activity throughout the body.

Think of the Thyroid Like a Thermostat

The thyroid functions similarly to the thermostat in your home.

If the thyroid becomes overactive and produces too much T3 and T4, it is like turning the thermostat too high — the body may feel overheated and overstimulated.

If the thyroid is underactive and does not produce or properly convert enough T4 into active T3, it is like setting the thermostat too low — energy production slows and the body struggles to maintain balance.

When the thyroid is functioning properly, it helps keep the body running at the right “temperature,” maintaining balance and metabolic stability.

What Can Impact Thyroid Function?

Thyroid health is connected to many systems throughout the body. Factors such as chronic stress, inflammation, nutrient deficiencies, toxic burden, and environmental exposures may all influence thyroid performance.

Heavy metals are often discussed in relation to thyroid health because certain metals, such as mercury, may interfere with normal biological processes involving iodine and thyroid hormone function.

Organs Connected to Thyroid Function

The thyroid does not work alone. It communicates closely with several major organs and glands, including:

• Pituitary gland • Hypothalamus • Liver • Kidneys

These systems work together to regulate hormone signaling, hormone conversion, detoxification pathways, and metabolic balance throughout the body.

Supporting overall health, mineral balance, restorative sleep, stress management, and detoxification pathways may help support healthy thyroid function naturally.
